February 1, 2024

It may seem early but we are already starting to plan for our plots at the Manistique Community Garden this summer.  We will be meeting Thursday, February 29, 2024 from 11-12 to discuss plans and organize the team.  We will be providing lunch at noon.  Please give us a call and let us know you will be coming so we know how many lunches to have prepared.

We are thrilled to announce we will be starting a weekly chair tai chi session here at the Manistique Senior Center!  We are still working out the details, and hope to have everything finalized by next week.  Tai chi is known for its slow, intentional movements and is particularly popular as a form of gentle exercise and moving meditation, with benefits to mental and physical health.

Don’t forget about the chair yoga sessions being offered every Monday 4:00 pm at the Senior Center!  Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that’s done while seated or using a chair for balance.  All sessions will be drop-in, so you can miss a week if needed.  Each session is $10 and you will pay the instructor directly.  Please make sure to call us at 906-341-5923 to let us know you are interested in attending.

We will be hosting a special seminar on February 15th, 2024 at 1:00 pm led by a staff member at the Alzheimer’s Association in Marquette.  The title of the seminar is “Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia.”  At the seminar you will be learning the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia, Alzheimer’s stages and risk factors, current research and available treatments, and ways the Alzheimer’s Association can help you and your family. Come and eat lunch at the Senior Center and stick around for this informative session.  If you are going to eat lunch make sure to call the kitchen at 906-341-5085.  We will have special treats for those who stick around!

Our next Senior Movies & Popcorn event will be on Thursday, February 22nd starting at 1:00 pm. We will be screening the 2014 movie where “Maggie (Melissa McCarthy), a struggling single woman, moves to Brooklyn with her 12-year-old son, Oliver. Having to work very long hours, she has no choice but to leave Oliver in the care of Vincent (Bill Murray), a bawdy misanthrope next door.”  Due to licensing rules, we are unable to advertise the title of the film, but you are more than welcome to give us a call to find out the title!  During the movie we will be providing coffee, water, and popcorn free of charge to all attendees.  We hope to have you join us on February 22nd!

Are you a resident of Schoolcraft County? Are you 60+ years of age? Do you reside in a single-family home?  If so, you qualify to receive reimbursements this winter to help offset the cost of snow removal.  Stop down to the Manistique Senior Center to learn more about the program and fill out an application to participate in the 2023-2024 Senior Snow Removal Program.
